The Benefits of Using Salt

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said:
فِي الْمِلْحِ شِفاءٌ مِنْ سَبْعينَ داء، ثُمَّ قالَ: لَوْ يَعْلَمُ النّاسُ ما فِي الْمِلْحِ ما تَداوَوا إلاّ بِهِ
“Salt is a cure for seventy diseases. If people knew what is in salt, they would not use anything else for treatment.”

Islamic Attitude towards Cleanliness

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said:
تَنَظَّفُوا بِكُلِّ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ، فَإنَّ اللّهَ تَعالی بَنَی الإسْلامَ عَلَی النِّظَافَةِ
“Keep clean to the extent you can, for God Almighty has built Islam on cleanliness.”

Moderation in Eating

Imam Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) said:
لَو أنَّ النّاسَ قَصَدُوا فِی المَطْعَمِ لَاسْتَقامَتْ أبْدانُهُمْ
“If people were moderate in their eating, their bodies would remain healthy. ”

Harm of Holding Urine

Imam Reza (a):
مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا یَشْتَكِیَ مَثَانَتَهُ فَلَا یَحْبِسِ الْبَوْلَ وَ لَوْ عَلَى ظَهْرِ دَابَّتِه‏؛
“Whoever wants to avoid complaints about their bladder should not hold their urine, even if they are riding on their mount.”

Using Medication When Unable to Endure Pain

The Messenger of Allah (s):
تَجَنَّبِ الدَّوَاءَ مَا احْتَمَلَ بَدَنُكَ الدَّاءَ فَإِذَا لَمْ یَحْتَمِلِ الدَّاءَ فَالدَّوَاء؛
“Avoid medication as long as your body can tolerate the pain, but when it cannot, then use medication.”

Food without Mentioning the Name of Allah

The Messenger of Allah (s) said:

«كُلُّ طَعامٍ لا يُذْكَرُ اِسْمُ اللّهِ عَلَيْهِ، فَاِنَّما هُوَ داءٌ وَ لا بَرَكَةَ فيهِ»

‘Every food on which the Name of Allah is not mentioned is (a cause of) disease and is devoid of barakah (blessing).’

The greatest blessing in the words of Amīr al-Muʾminīn, ʿAlī (a)

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:

«اَلصِّحَّةُ اَفْضَلُ النِّعَمِ»

‘Health is the best of blessings.’

The Expediency of Divine Permission and Prohibition

امام رضا علیه السلام فرمودند:

إنَّ اللهَ تَبارَکَ وَ تَعالی لَمْ یُبِحْ اَکْلاً وَ لا شُرْبا اِلاّ ما فیهِ الْمَنْفَعَةُ وَ الصَّلاحُ وَ لَمْ یُحَرِّالَکْفَرِّمْ اِلاَّ ما فِیهِ. ُلُّ نافِعٍ مُقَوٍّ لِلْجِسْمِ فیهِ قُوَّةٌ لِلْبَدَنِ فَهُوَ حَلالٌ وَ کُلُّ مُضِرٍّ یَذْهَبُ فَالْقُوَّةِ.

«همانا خداوند تبارک و تعالی غذا و آشامیدنی را جایز نگذاشته جز آن چه در آن منفعت و خیر باشد و نهی نکرده مگر از آن چیزی که ضرر و زیان و فساد داشته باشد، پس هر سودمندی که بدن را تقویت کند حلال است. و هر چیز مضری که ضعیف کند یا بکشد، حرام است».

The Importance of the Stomach in Well-being and Illness

امام علی علیه السلام فرمود:
اَلْمَعِدَةُ بَیْتُ الادواءِ وَ الْحِمیَةُ رَأسُ الدَّواءِ، وَ عَوِّدْ كُلَّ بَدَنٍ ما اعْتادَ. لاصِحَّةَ مَعَ النَّهَمِ.
«معده خانه هر دردی است و کنترل غذای سرچشمه است، به هر بدنی که به آن عادت کرده‌اید به سلامتی و پرخوری با هم نیست».

Refraining from Seeing a Doctor Unless Necessary

Imam al-Kāẓim, peace be upon him, advised:
اِدْفَعوا مُعالَجَةَ الاَطِبّاءِ مَا انْدَفَعَ الدّاءُ عَنْكُمْ، فَاِنَّهُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْبِناءِ قَليلُهُ يَجُرُّ اِلى كَثيرِة.
“Refrain from seeking medical treatment when the illness is kept at bay, for treatment is akin to building; a little of it leads to much.”
